Auxiliary power units
With equipment becoming increasingly sophisticated and dependant more than ever on electronics and computers, the need for adequate, reliable and cost effective power units is critical to the functioning of a modern fighting vehicle and its crew.
Auxiliary power units (APU’s) are power units designed to supplement the main power generator for both fighting and support units. These units depend on reliable, efficient and stable power to perform their functions and protect their crew. Even a small power drop or surge can be lead to unreliable data or equipment malfunction and can be fatal! Auxiliary Power Units provide unique, cost effective solutions that provide the extra power needed to sustain activity when the main power unit is overloaded, extra power is demanded or to provide power to vital systems when the main generating plant is shut down. This can reduce noise, heat signatures and running costs.
Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Systems (NBC)
NBC protection systems for fighting vehicles and support units provide crew protection from nuclear, biological and chemical contaminants. These units can either be integrated into the vehicles life support system or operate as standalone units according to the needs of the vehicle, it’s theatre of operations and any other considerations that must be taken into account. Because of the complexity of such systems and the wide area of operations that today’s modern fighting force has to deal with, NBC Protection systems can usually be customized to meet specific demands.
NBC Protection systems can be divided into three main categories:
- Overpressure System: the air pressure in the cabin is greater than that of the outside environment. In effect, contaminated air from outside is “pushed” away by positive air pressure from within the vehicle. Individual protection for crew is not required.
- Collective Facemasks: In situations when an NBC protection system based on overpressure is impractical, crews have individual facemasks providing a clean, uncontaminated and filtered air supply.
- Hybrid Protection: In situations when may be required to breach hull integrity in contaminated areas, a system utilizing both Overpressure and Collective facemask systems is used to provide maximum protection for crew at all times.
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense systems (CBRN systems)
CBRN systems are very similar to NBC protection systems but incorporate added protection and filtration against radiation and radiation contaminated particles.
Life Support Systems (LSS systems)
Life Support Systems (LSS) provide an all-in-one life protecting and life sustaining environment for crew of military vehicles or installations. Life Support systems because of their importance to maintaining a fighting or support unit’s capability to function under the most severe conditions usually incorporate advanced, cutting edge technology. Life support systems can be complete units integrated into a vehicle or facility, individual units for personnel or a combination of the two. A Life support system can incorporate any or all of the following components:
• NBC / CBRN Systems
• Heating Ventilation & Air-Conditioning systems (HVAC)
• Individual Crew Cooling Systems (ICCS)
• Auxiliary Power Units (APU)
